Outdoors in Louisiana

With year-round hunting, fishing, golf and countless other opportunities for outdoor recreation, it is easy to see why Louisiana's nickname is "Sportsman's Paradise.”

Sure, that’s a lot to live up to. But with hundreds of hiking and biking trails, beautiful State Parks, and one of the largest game preserves in the United States, Louisiana is the ultimate playground for all outdoorsmen. Our vast expanse of coastal wetlands and countless birding trails make our state a habitat for many rare and endangered species and a natural paradise for bird watchers as well. Come step into the wild outdoors of Louisiana.

One facet of Louisiana that makes it such an appealing visitor destination is its deep and colorful history.

European explorers found their way to the Louisiana region and inhabited the area very early relative to the settlement of much of the rest of the continent. As a result, some communities in Louisiana are among the oldest in the United States. Before those explorers arrived, the Choctaw and Chitimacha tribes populated the region. Reaching still farther back in time, ancient peoples left their mark on the area thousands of years ago.

The state of Louisiana offers many ways to explore the region’s rich history, in hundreds of museums, historic structures, landmarks, artifacts and works of art. The careful preservation and restoration of these sites and artifacts has created many rare opportunities for visitors to experience Louisiana’s history and gain insights into the diverse cultures that continue to influence the state today.

Louisiana's Culinary Trails

Not long ago, there was a scientific study that ranked Louisiana as the nation’s happiest state. Many reasons likely led to this distinction, but we’re pretty sure our incredible Louisiana cuisine played a role. Bite into a beignet and see if a smile doesn’t break out.

Our Louisiana roots run deep inside a culinary wonderland drawn from French, Spanish, African, Sicilian, Caribbean, Irish, German and American Indian cultures. Add a dash of country comfort and a pinch of sophistication, and you’ve got a recipe for the best food on the planet.

We don’t just eat and drink, we plan our lives around the culinary seasons. Just days after the New Year, Mardi Gras season ushers in the arrival of king cakes, followed by months of crawfish boils in the spring, slurping snoballs and cracking crabs in the summer, with football tailgating in the fall and warm gumbo as the weather turns cold.

We’re waiting for you with open arms and aprons on, so grab a cold drink and let’s get busy.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, after touching surfaces frequently touched by others, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, and before touching your face or eating.
  • If soap and water are not available, bring and use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub your hands together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Practice Social Distancing by keeping 6 feet of physical distance from others.
  • Do not gather in large groups.
  • Wear a cloth face covering in public.

Visit the Louisiana Department of Health’s website for more on specific guidelines and COVID-19 resources.
