HOTELS
The Tohoku region of Japan is home to unspoiled rural landscapes and historical treasures, outdoor summer adventures and endless powder snow in the winter.
Japan's northeastern wilderness is a huge region encompassing six rural prefectures, bound together by custom and heritage.
There's a lot to be proud of—dramatic landscapes, history-rich sites, craft sake and a host of outdoor activities like rafting, hiking and skiing.
From Tokyo, major tourist destinations in Tohoku are easily accessed by shinkansen (bullet train) or short flight. The region makes for exciting excursions from the capital and memorable side trips on the journey to the northernmost region of Japan's main island.

A short ferry ride from the Miyajimaguchi Port, Miyajima is one of the most visited areas in Hiroshima Prefecture.
It is home to Itsukushima-jinja and the floating gate, listed by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. There are several other shrines and temples on the island.
The island itself was once considered so sacred that it was separated from the shrine so no one would spoil the sacred ground. This is why the entrance to the shrine, a huge red wooden gate, is also constructed offshore.
Miyajima drew many craftsmen during the shrine construction and ongoing repairs, and it is now famous for wood carving.
